DRSABCD - Follow these steps when faced with a water emergency

DANGER
Check surroundings for any danger (e.g. rocks or dangerous objects floating in the water). Assure you are not putting yourself in danger when going to the assistance of another person.
SEND FOR HELP
Send a bystander to get help and call 000.

RESPONSE
From outside of the water, call out to the person to check for a response. Follow one of these emergency options which best suits your situation in order to retrieve the person from the water:
AIRWAY
(If conscious)
Asses how you can help with possible injuries.
(If unconscious)
Check the airway by opening their mouth and looking inside. If the mouth is clear, lift their chin gently to tilt the head back and check for breathing.
If the mouth is not clear, roll person onto their side and open their mouth, clearing the contents away. Then tilt the head back and check for breathing.

- conscious in murky water where depth is unknown
- conscious in water where depth is known

BREATHING
Check for:
CPR
If no signs of life are present, begin CPR.
30 chest compression, followed by two breaths.
DEFIBRILLATION
Attach AED and follow the attached instructions
Check for:
- Rise and fall of the chest
- Listen for the sound of breathing
